1. Over the past 3 months, the 2026 revenue forecast for the memory market rose from $520B to $890B (+71%). That's 4x more than in 2025.
2. A $600B jump in a single year is larger than the entire annual market for smartphones, PCs, or servers individually.
3. Stock divergence: memory makers' shares are up almost 300% since the start of 2026, while consumer electronics stocks are down 1% on average.
4. Three companies, Samsung, SK hynix and Micron $MU , control ~90% of the global DRAM market and 100% of the HBM market. South Korea alone produces ~75% of all DRAM chips in the world.
5. Every new AI chip, rack and data center needs more memory. A single AI accelerator chip now requires 288 gigabytes of memory, 7x more than the previous chip generation.
6. One server (a cabinet packed with these chips) now holds roughly 65x more memory. One cluster (an entire hall of thousands of servers used to train the most advanced AI models) holds roughly 1,800x more memory than six years ago.
7. In top-tier AI servers, memory has become the second most expensive component after the accelerator chip itself. In a single rack, the cost of memory rose from $374,000 to $2 million, more than 5x.
8. Phones and computers used to take most of the memory. Now AI servers take an ever larger share: their portion of demand for working memory has grown from 37% to nearly 60%, while their share of demand for storage memory has jumped from 18% to 65%.
9. There physically won't be enough memory for phones and laptops. In 2027, the smartphone and PC markets will shrink by 10-15% due to a shortage of components. In units, that's about 58 million computers and 134 million phones that won't be built.
10. To protect profits, prices have to rise sharply. The memory shortage could push phone prices up 30% and PC prices up 60%. This would likely be the steepest price jump in the history of the global electronics market.
11. What the companies themselves are saying (real quotes)
- Lenovo (laptops): memory rose 40-50% in a single quarter, then nearly doubled again. They called it a permanent shift, not a temporary one.
- PC component maker Fractal: memory in a computer build now sometimes costs more than the processor itself.
- Automaker GM added $1.5-2 billion to its cost guidance because of more expensive chips. Nintendo built in a hit to its cost of goods and raised the price of the Switch 2 console.
12. The effect on official inflation is small for now. Electronics make up a small share of the consumer basket.
